| Homeless Service System Core Training and Providers NetworkCore Training In 2002 the coalition began a series of core trainings that provided staff members from various agencies a general overview of the homeless service system. The trainings are used to raise awareness about the state of homelessness in RI and nationally and to educate individuals and agencies on how to navigate consumers through the system so that is is most beneficial to them and their needs. Topics that are covered include an overview of the homeless service system, the Housing Locator Program, resources for housing search, the Homeless Management Information System and the Shelter and Housing Providers Network. Trainings have been conducted at a variety of agencies including the Department of Corrections, Department of Human Services, staff of the Miriam Hospital and member agencies of the coalition. Trainings are ongoing and are available to staff of agencies throughout the community. For more information please call Jim at 401.421.6458. The Shelter and Housing Provider's Network (SHPN) Click here for Shelter Resource Guide The Shelter and Housing Providers Network was formed in 1994 as a mechanism to address system issues faced by member agencies and consumers. It is an important outlet for those working in the area of homelessness as place to network, share resources, provide trainings and learn more about other programs throughout RI. The group meets quarterly throughout the year, so give Jim a call for times and dates. In collaboration with the RI Council of Community Mental Health and the RI Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals, a series of workshops covering effective service to culturally diverse populations, behavioral health, interaction involvement and intervention, and professional relationships are offered to service providers statewide. Each year these classes train a wide range of service providers and those new to the system and continue to be well received. Trainings are held in a central location with presenters that are well informed, keeping service providers up-to-date with the current state and progress of treatments available for those they serve. STREET SHEETS STREET SHEETS have been an ongoing work of the coalition since its inception in 1988. It started with meal sites and shelter listings in the Providence area only, but the demand grew and expanded to other communities. STREET SHEETS include contacts for meal sites, shelters, health care providers and help lines. This necessary tool for those in need is also useful to those providers who are trying to assist them. The coalition prints a version for Northern RI/Blackstone Valley and the Providence area, which are both available in Spanish plus the Newport/South and Kent County. Currently over one hundred and forty organizations, soup kitchens and churches receive STREET SHEETS which are delivered or mailed out across the state. Please contact the coalition for your request to be placed on the mailing list. STREET SIGHTS - A new publication! Street Sights is a new publication serves as a forum for advocates, homeless individuals, students, state officials, and the general public to share accurate and honest information about homelessness issues. Its goal is to bring light on the subject not often addressed, and to some degree, ignored. Please visit the publications website at STREET SIGHTS. Back to Top |
